Montfort Knights visit Newtown Water Treatment Plant

Mrs. Catherine Halleran, chair of The Montfort Academy’s mathematics department and retired nuclear engineer with decades of engineering experience at Con Edison and a mechanical/nuclear engineering degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, accompanied four Montfort students with an interest in math/science/engineering to a presentation and plant tour of the Newtown Water Treatment Plant. On the trip, the NYC Department of Environmental Education shared the process of how NYC attains, treats, transports and distributes drinking water. The presenter described the systems used to collect and process waste water. Discussions about conservation, environmental awareness of recycling and disposal of waste products occurred. Photos of "fatbergs" were displayed and solutions were discussed. The day ended with a unique tour of the water treatment plant of areas such as the computer/central control room, boiler room, aeration process, chemistry labs and the hands on look into an anaerobic process of the egg digesters.

Students selected were seniors Keegan Boyne and Kevin Orozco and freshmen Rebecca McFarland and Kayla Malcom.
