 Giving to Montfort

The Montfort Academy is an independent, not-for-profit high school that is funded entirely through private giving and tuition. We do not accept any funding from the federal government, state or local government, or any religious group or affiliation, including the Archdiocese of New York.

Therefore, The Montfort Academy depends exclusively on the generosity of parents, friends, advisors, trustees, foundations, and corporations who believe in our mission of providing a solid, classical education, built on centuries of careful development, and who wish to support our students and special programs. We embrace the great challenge presented by our need to raise funds to accomplish the mission and realize the vision of the Montfort Academy.

Since opening in 2002, The Montfort Academy has become a premier educational institution. For four consecutive years, the Acton Institute has ranked our academy among the fifty best Catholic high schools in America. We have led our students on archeological expeditions to Italy. We have hosted a United States Senator. And the Secretary of Education for the Archdiocese of New York has praised our education, calling for more schools like The Montfort Academy.

Our objective is simple: to help form the minds, bodies, and souls of our students. To do so, we return to the basics of Western civilization that have stood the test of time but have all but disappeared in our classrooms: Latin, Greek, astronomy, archeology, debate and rhetoric, religion, philosophy, civics, ethics, and much more. We teach the best that man has thought, said, or done in the world, and we prepare our students not only for college and higher learning but for life.

The Montfort Academy is transforming young men and women and is transforming education in New York by reintroducing excellence in the classroom and raising standards. But to continue, we need your help. We need operating funds to meet current expenses, and we need capital funds to secure our future. This website outlines how you can help.

The Annual Fund
The Annual Fund is vitally important, as tuition alone is not enough to cover all costs of educating our students. One hundred percent of the annual fund supports faculty and staff in the classroom. Many of our students are economically disadvantaged, and we offer them tuition credits that are funded through our annual fund. Our annual goal is $650,000, and no gift is too small. For large gifts, we are pleased to offer the opportunity to name in perpetuity our building, classrooms, and special programs in honor of you or someone you love, living or deceased.

We will ask you to describe the ideal recipient of your scholarship, and we will send you several candidates from whom to choose, if you wish to be active in the selection process. In addition, we pledge to send you regular updates on the progress of the student or students. For the biographies and photos of our students, please click here.

Sponsoring Montfort's Physical Plant

I. The Science Laboratories

The Montfort Academy is always trying to be at the forefront of modern scientific education. To that end, we seek to continuously improve both our curriculum and our laboratories. If you wish to sponsor a science laboratory, please call us, and we will work together to determine the actual costs of the laboratory.

II. The Computer Laboratory

The Montfort Academy has enjoyed a computer room made possible by the generous donation of Stern Stewart & Company. These computers are now two generations behind and are in need of replacement. If you wish to donate to our computer room, please call, and we will determine the actual costs and needs of the laboratory.

Sponsoring Various Curricular and Extra-Curricular Activities

I. The Athletics Program

The Montfort Academy is seeking to build upon its already successful basketball and track and field teams. We wish to begin with soccer.

In addition, anyone wishing to donate new or old school equipment such as copiers, etc., please contact us. Equipment is always welcome.

II. The Debate Team

The Montfort Academy's curriculum is based on the classical trivium and quadrivium, part of which is mastery of debate and rhetoric. In addition to regular classroom instruction and practice in these areas, The Montfort Academy has established a debate team which will begin competing next year. The team will be named after the sponsor.

Sponsorship of our debate team $50,000

Other Giving Opportunities:

Adopt-a-Scholar Program

This program provides you with an opportunity to endow a perpetual or annual scholarship in your name or the name of someone dear to you. The perpetual scholarship is awarded every four years, while the annual scholarship is a one-time four-year grant. Half and full annual scholarships are funded at $7,500 and $15,000. Perpetual scholarships are funded at $250,000.

Partnership-in-Education Program

The Columbus Citizens Foundation is a not-for-profit foundation that provides scholarships to needy students of Italian-American descent. The Columbus Citizens Foundation and The Montfort Academy have agreed to match your gift 2:1 in cash and tuition credits. A gift of $5,000 annually for four years will provide a full scholarship of $15,000 to one of our Italian-American students under this program.

Planned Giving Opportunities

We can also provide you with information about life income plans that will benefit you, as well as the academy. For example:

Gift Annuities

You irrevocably transfer cash or securities to the academy in exchange for our promise to pay you a fixed amount annually for the rest of your life. The annual amount is determined by the amount of your gift and your age. Once established, your income remains constant. Part of your income is tax-free and you may claim a charitable contribution for a part of the amount transferred.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

In exchange for your gift of cash, securities, or other property, you can receive income for yourself and/or anyone you select for life, or for a specified term, not to exceed 20 years. You can claim a charitable contribution for the present value of your future gift to Montfort Academy.

Charitable Lead Trusts

Your transfer of cash or securities to a lead trust pays a percentage of the value of the trust assets to Montfort, usually for a term of years. At the end of the term, the remaining assets and any growth are passed to your named beneficiary. Although there is no income tax deduction upon creation, your gift or estate tax is greatly discounted and any growth is passed to your beneficiary gift and estate tax free.
