The Italian Club was established to work in conjunction with our Italian classes program. Its members take part in several cultural activities during Italian Heritage Month in October and throughout the year. We march in the Columbus Day Parade both in White Plains and in New York City , we attend an opera performance, hold a dinner celebrating a particular region of Italy and cook the foods of the region, play the music and learn of its history, art and traditions. Two other evening cultural events are held, both celebrating an aspect of Italian culture. This past year we hosted film producer and director, Flaminia Lubin who is working on a documentary entitled, "50 Italians". The film follows the extraordinary people, all Italians, who, through their heroic efforts, were able to save 50,000 Jewish lives during the Nazi regime. The Italian Language and Culture club also hosted a folk group from Calabria; "Tira Dirittu", which entertained participants with stories and songs of the region. Also included in the list of activities for October are: wine making, attending a soccer game, and Italian movie and dinner night. We create a presepe for the Advent season, hold an Epiphany / Befana celebration (Jan. 6th), a Carnevale dinner, a Giorno della donna celebration, a St. Joseph Day commemoration, and celebrate another region of the students' choice. In May the club members make preparations for the Italian National Honor Society induction ceremony.
