Counseling and Guidance

Because of The Montfort Academy's mission, Counseling and Guidance are significantly different than at many high schools around the nation. Unlike many schools, Montfort is able to offer a great deal of spiritual guidance, especially through our chaplain, the Reverend Paul Waddell, who is available to all students for Spiritual Direction and Sacramental Confession. Our Catholic identity, therefore, is central to our philosophy of guidance.

While we recognize that the psychological development of adolescents is important, we do not believe that it is necessarily prudent to have the school interfere overmuch in family life; the primary role models for students must, in most instances, be their parents, and the school does not wish to try to supplant parents in this role. Because of the small size of the school, and the student to faculty ratio, all students are able to receive significant amounts of personalized attention from faculty, many of whom act as mentors for the students in their charge. Counseling and guidance, then, rather than being relegated to a single department, is actually the concern of the whole school, which takes collective responsibility for the well-being of our students.

Counseling and guidance as a department is, in this light, specifically geared towards preparation for, and participation in, the college admissions process. For more information on this, please see the College Admissions page.
